Summer Reading Program Starts June 5

5/31/2018

PictureThe theme of the library's summer reading programs is "Libraries Rock." The program runs June 5-July 17.
The Signal Mountain Library’s 2018 Summer Reading Program will run on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. from June 5 through July 17. "Libraries Rock" is the theme for this year’s program, which is part of the national collaborative Summer Library Program. All events will be held at the library, except the visit to the Signal Mountain Playhouse, which is located next door.

The summer reading program provides enrichment events for local children, age 2 through rising fifth-graders. Our presentations feature music, drama, dance, art, magic and animals and typically draw big crowds. Parents are asked to stay with their children during the events.

Registration for the program will begin June 5, immediately following the kickoff by the Bandana Babes’ Sing-Along. Children are provided with logs in which they may record the names of the books they read over the summer. Lake Winnepesaukah offers all participants in the summer reading program 2-for-1 coupons that may be used for admission to the local amusement park on August 12, 19 or 26 of this year. At the final event of the program, a visit from the Tennessee Aquarium, there will be a drawing held for two complimentary passes to Lake Winnie. Winners must be present to win.

The schedule for the Summer Reading Program is as follows:
  • June 5: Join the Bandana Babes for a rousing sing-along, followed by registration.
  • July 12: Noah’s Little Ark Petting Zoo and Pony Rides will return with its menagerie of animals.
  • July 19: GPS Terpsichord Dancers will perform and teach movement to the children, who are encouraged to wear tutus or leotards.
  • June 26: Magician Jacob Cornell will entertain and amaze us with his sleight of hand.
  • July 3: Join us for a visit to the Signal Mountain Playhouse where we will be treated to a preview of the summer production, “Shrek: The Musical.”
  • July 10: Local artist and teacher Augusta Webb will help each child create a piece of art to take home.
  • July 17: Mr. Bill from the Tennessee Aquarium will present “Tropical Treasures” for our young audience. A drawing for free passes to Lake Winnie will also take place, with winners required to be present to win.

Please mark these dates on your calendar for a fun-filled summer at the library!

SMPH Holding Auditions for Summer Musical

5/15/2018

PictureAuditions for SMPH's production of "Shrek the Musical" are May 19 & 20.
Get ready to join up with Shrek and his friends this summer for the Signal Mountain Playhouse’s 47th outdoor extravaganza, which will run for eight nights in July. But first, dash for your calendars or cell phones to enter these important dates for auditions this month: May 19 and 20.

The show tells the story of a big, green ogre named Shrek who must enter into a deal with the bad guy Lord Farquaad to get rid of a crowd of fairy tale characters who have invaded his beloved swamp. The deal he makes brings lovely romance to the story, a necessary component of any good “once upon a time” venture.

Thrilled to have newcomer Joel Scribner as director this summer, the Playhouse welcomes him to the group’s “little neck of the woods.” Joel has never directed for the Playhouse, but he will be familiar to local theatergoers as the marvelous actor who played Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof” at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre not long ago. Joel’s lengthy resume includes 30 years of involvement in live theater as a director, producer, actor, and playwright. He is the founder and artistic director of Yellow Dragon Productions, which opened its first season this past December. The Playhouse is so proud to have Joel at the helm of “Shrek the Musical!”

Also bringing talent and experience to the production are three Playhouse favorites: Jennifer Arbogast Wilson, who directed the Playhouse’s “Peter Pan” and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” will choreograph the show; Michael Huseman will return as musical director; and Nick Hartline will conduct the Playhouse Orchestra. These professionals will make for a fantastic show, as well as a wonderful learning experience for those in the cast.

The Playhouse amphitheater, located on Rolling Way between the police and fire departments and James Boulevard, is the venue for auditions, as well as the show. The audition dates and times are Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. until noon for children ages 9 through 12, and from 1-3 p.m. for those 13 and up, including adults. On Sunday, May 20, auditions are from 2- 4 p.m. for all ages. Any necessary callbacks will be on Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m.

Production dates for “Shrek the Musical” are July 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28.

There are some helpful guidelines for auditioning. Everyone who auditions must wear closed toe shoes for safety because set construction will be underway. It’s not necessary to have a musical number prepared for auditions as the directors will teach the songs and movements on site. Those folks auditioning will sing, move and read from the script. Also, bring your list of any conflicts you might have between May 21 and June 23 so these can be noted by the stage manager. Most importantly, all who are cast in the show must be at every rehearsal and performance after June 23. The quality of the show depends on the presence of every actor, no matter how “big” or “small” the part, at rehearsals after this date.

If you have questions, visit smph.org or the Playhouse Facebook page, email signalmountainplayhouse@gmail.com, or call (423) 763-7219.

Don’t miss the first ever Signal Mountain Middle School musical on Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5.
