Provide Your Opinion on Schools

The School System Viability Committee, assembled by the Signal Mountain Town Council, is examining the feasibility of forming an independent Signal Mountain School District. The SSVC is seeking input from concerned citizens, local public school administrators, teachers, school staff and parents and guardians about how best to provide optimal quality education for children attending Signal Mountain public schools.

Whether you know children who attend Signal Mountain schools or have concerns about education, you may have thoughts to share and ideas about how the schools could be improved. The SSVC wants to hear from you.

The survey is anonymous and will take about 10-15 minutes to complete. After all the anonymous responses are received, they will be summarized and included in group form in the final report of the SSVC, which will be available to the public and shared with the Signal Mountain Town Council; summary findings may also be discussed with Hamilton County Department of Education.

This is a chance to offer your ideas and suggestions. The survey will remain open until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, August 21. The SSVC and Town of Signal Mountain looks forward to hearing from you.

The survey can be found online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/DQPXKGK.

by Joe Durek
The Walden Board of Mayor and Aldermen held its monthly meeting on July 11. The first item of business was the resignation of Vice Mayor Thomas R. Peterson. Alderman Peterson recently completed the construction of his new home in Hixson and has resigned because his new residence is not in Walden.

Sara McKenzie will replace Mr. Peterson. Alderman McKenzie retired from Regions Bank where she was a senior vice president. Ms. McKenzie is a member of the St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church and a member of the Junior League. She previously served as president of the Chattanooga Cotton Ball and holds an MBA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Alderman Lee Davis was named vice mayor.

Mayor Bill Trohanis gave the police report. There was one traffic citation, one arrest and five business alarms.

Andrew Fisher from WRES reported 12 calls, one auto accident, six medical calls, one downed tree and one downed wire. The Hamilton County architect should complete the drawings for the new WRES headquarters in two to three months.
Representing McCoy Farm & Gardens, Frank Robbins spoke about the increased bookings for wedding and special events. The lower level of the Carriage House has been renovated, and the Lions’ blacksmith shop re-creation was a big hit at the Memorial Day Picnic.

Bachman Community Center will participate in the World’s Largest Yard Sale, August 3-5, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Donations of lawn equipment, small furniture and antiques are appreciated, as are volunteers to work the Bachman booth during the sale. The Bachman Council extended appreciation to Eagle Scout Jack Johnson for renovating the playground.

Kim Fookes, representing the “Stay with HCDE” group, spoke about committee’s recent trip to Shelby County to learn how it started its municipal schools.  She explained that a group has been formed to oppose creating a separate school district. The group has a website, www.staywithhcde.com, to present its positions.
The second reading of proposed ordinance No. 2017-318 passed. The ordinance amends the town’s zoning ordinance to create a special permit for building footprints greater than 5,000 square feet in the C-1 general commercial zone.

Ordinance No. 2017-319, a budget and tax levy for fiscal year ending June 30, 2018, passed on first reading. The new assessment was received from Marty Haynes, assessor of property for Hamilton County, and the options are either to keep the same tax rate or increase it. It was estimated that the town of Walden will lose $300,000 in revenue from the Hall Tax change.

The next meeting of the Walden Board of Mayor and Aldermen is Tuesday, August 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Walden Town Hall.

Located under the big tent at the Price Right Convenience Store at 2900 Taft Hwy., the Highway to Haiti Yard Sale will benefit the St. Antoine School, a parish mission in Haiti. Please plan to shop for treasures at this great sale under the big tent.

The Highway to Haiti Yard Sale will run during the Highway 127 World’s Longest Yard Sale on August 3-6. If you wish to donate unused items from your home, just bring them out to the tent during the sale or call Allen Vessells at (423) 886-6223 to schedule a pick-up.

Almost 400 families from St. Augustine’s Catholic Church will be donating wonderful items, from antiques, curios, games, toys, furniture, books and other assorted finds.
St. Antoine’s School was founded by Signal native Jack Davidson with the support of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. He heads the American Haitian Foundation, which underwrites the school where more than 1,500 children, from kindergarten through 13th grade (schools in Haiti have 13 grades), are fed and educated. St. Augustine’s Annual Yard Sale has been benefiting the poor of Haiti for over 17 years.

The sale accepts cash or checks (with a driver’s license and a photo ID).

American Haitian Foundation board member Betty Miles encourages everyone to donate and then shop at the Highway to Haiti Yard Sale to support the St. Antoine School, which gives hope to so many who need a hand up in Haiti.
