This fall, 62 local Girl Scouts headed to Camp Holloway near Nashville for their annual fall camporee. Founded in 1952 by Jo- sephine Groves Holloway, Camp Holloway allows multiple generations of Girl Scouts to visit and explore the great outdoors together. The fall camporee is for older scouts ranging from Junior to AmbassadorScouts (fourth through 11th grades). Each troop that visited Camp Holloway was able to choose unique experiences that appealed to them, such as archery, screen printing and tree climbing. Some troops took the opportunity to earn badges while at camp. For example, girls from Signal’s junior troop 40030 (Scarlett Clark, Gigi Elder, Phoebe Hogan, andEowyn Shoop) earned their cooking badges by teaming up and making spaghetti and meatballs for themselves and their parents. Lodging at Camp Holloway varies as well, from rustic and dorm-style cabins to platform tents. Saturday night offered a one-of-a-kind experience. Organized by the 11th grade Ambassador Troop 40510 (Allie Selman, Emma Lambeth and MarlonAndrews), the Girl Scouts participated in their own version of the “Amazing Race.” This activity helped members of the Ambassador troop complete their Sisterhood Journey before embarking onto their Gold Award. While each experience was different, there was one common thread: The girls made memories that will last a lifetime.

The Center for Mindful Living’s “Paths to Peace” event will take place Saturday, October 27, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre with a full schedule of activities for all ages.

“We hope this event will provide an opportunity to bring people together to experience activities that nurture and unite us in a common quest for world peace and to be mindful of our common humanity,” said Elizabeth Kabalka, executive director of the Center for Mindful Living.

In addition to children’s activities, a new Pies for Peace component will include a variety of pies provided by dozens of area churches and faith-based institutions. “We are bringing people together over a free piece of pie to create conversation and a unifying experience,” explained Kabalka.

The Paths to Peace event is free of charge, and will feature labyrinth walks for adults and children led by Ellen Simak and Margy Oehmig, along with an introduction to mindfulness practices, yoga, Qigong, art, dance and more! The afternoon will conclude with free pieces of pie for all attending. If your church or faith-based organization is interested in donating pies for the event, or for more information, go to centermindfulliving.org or check it out on Facebook.

The Center for Mindful Living is a 501c3 nonprofit that educates the community about the benefits of mindfulness and provides opportunities for people to develop a mindfulness practice. These practices lead to more joy, balance, and compassion. Our mission is to empower people to decrease their stress and increase their well-being.

The holiday shopping season is already upon us as Saturday and Sunday on Signal – Signal Mountain’s most anticipated shopping event of the year – returns November 10 and 11. The town-wide Holiday Open House is hosted annually by over a dozen area businesses that work together to offer customers holiday sales, giveaways and special events all weekend.

This year’s participants feature three woman-owned businesses in the Signal Crossing shopping area, each marking notable milestones. Threads came under new ownership this summer, and owner Jennifer Schleger and her team have introduced a number of exciting and adorable new lines. The Freckled Peddler’s Niki Sanko moved her highly regarded gift store to Signal Crossing in September and gave it a bright new look. Summerfield Studio Floral Design owner Rebecca Atchley recently opened her doors to the public for the first time.

Signal Commons’ Mountain Top Toys, where customers can “shop and drop” new toys and gifts for the Toys for Tots program, is also participating in this fun event. Cash donations are accepted this year, and Mountain Top Toys will match any donated amount in new toys for the organization.

Across Taft Highway at Signal Plaza, long-time Saturday and Sunday on Signal participants include Accents, All Creatures Great & Small and Cutting Corners Framing & Gifts. Both Accents and Cutting Corners, in particular, have been involved with this special event for countless years and always offer wonderful items each year. They are joined this year by newcomer CHI Memorial Internal Medicine Associates. Bud Floral + Home will participate this year with special activities inside Pruett’s Market, where Bud’s amazing arrangements are featured daily.

Just a little further up Taft Highway, Ashley Plaza’s Chattanooga Jewelry Company returns for the fourth year. Owner Brandon Anthony has taken the success he attributes to loyal Signal customers and recently opened a second location inside the Chattanooga Choo Choo. He anticipates a busy holiday season, both on and off the mountain.

At the front of the mountain, Yessick’s on Signal returns with some delightful new home decor and design offerings at its Ridgeway Avenue location. And for those who are hungry or in need of some beverage pick-me-up, Mississippi Avenue’s Hummingbird Pastaria (Saturday only) and Mayfly Coffee, which recently expanded its menu and its hours, will delight so many as part of the Holiday Open House weekend.

For some weekend shoppers, the Saturday and Sunday on Signal event will be especially rewarding. Three winners will each receive a $50 gift certificate to the local Saturday and Sunday on Signal business of their choice. For more details about the event, visit SaturdayAndSundayOnSignal.com.

Toddler Storytime resumed at the library on October 2 and continues on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. The free sessions, which last for about 45 minutes each week, are open to all young children accompanied by their moms, grandmothers or caregivers.

At Storytime, children hear stories, sing songs and complete simple coloring pages and/ or crafts. The program is appropriate for age 2 and up, but feel free to bring younger siblings.

Storytime is designed to introduce children to the library and to being in a setting with other children where they will learn to sit and listen. It is amazing to see how much they mature from October to May, when Storytime ends for the school year.

The goal of the program is to supplement parents’ read-aloud times and to promote reading-aloud to children, even after they can read themselves. A recent article in Publishers Weekly stated that the best way to help your child experience reading success in school is to read aloud to them.
If you have questions, call the library at (423) 886-7323. We look forward to a fun and exciting eight months.

Six juniors at Signal Mountain Middle High School are National Merit Semifinalists. This is the largest group in the school’s history and also the most of any school in our region.

Congratulations to Jack Poss, Max Burk, Jake Little, Emily Perez, David Cornea and Paolo Patrick Iacoponi!

It is a huge accomplishment for these academically talented students to become a Semifinalist and thus be eligible for a National Merit Scholarship. To earn this honor, one must meet criteria that includes scoring in the top 1 percent among juniors across the country on the Preliminary SAT/National

Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, often shortened to PSAT.
SMMHS Principal Shane Harwood complimented the school’s staff and students’ parents for supporting these students. “It is through a collective commitment to excellence in teaching and learning that our students aim for and reach the very highest of goals,” he said. “We’re so excited to see what the future holds for them.”

Most of these students are expected to move on to become National Merit Finalists, winning scholarship money for college. Good luck to our Signal Mountain Semifinalists!
