What's Happening at Your Library

9/4/2026

Friends of the Library have two special events to announce. On Friday, August 28, they will be hosting author Allie Millington, who wrote the book “Olivetti:  A Boy, A Typewriter, and the Stories They Hold.” This middle grade novel about an abandoned Olivetti typewriter that belongs to the Brindle family has been praised by Tom Hanks in the New York Times as “a great favor to readers.”

The author requested two school visits and a “Lunch and Learn” time for adults.  She will be speaking to the fifth grade class at Nolan in the morning and to the fifth grade class at Thrasher in the afternoon. Between the two visits, we will have lunch on the back porch of the Library patio from 12-1 p.m. for any adults who would like to come and visit with Allie. Bring your own lunch, and the Friends of the Library will have cold drinks and dessert. There will be books available to buy at the circulation desk for $9. Please come and enjoy.

Mark your calendars for October 22. We will be hosting author Rick Bragg at the Mountain Arts Community Center. More information coming!

Don’t forget the monthly 25 cent sale on the 25th of each month downstairs in the Book Nook. It will take place on Tuesday, the 25th of August. Come find some books that are new to you.

Thanks to Those Who Beautify the Library
Many thanks to the Garden Club of Signal Mountain for the beautiful shade garden display in the library during the spring. It was a beautiful scene combined with the gardening books offered from the Book Nook. The Garden Club also lovingly cares for the bright, welcoming pots of flowers in front of the library.
Thanks also are due to the Friends of the Library for the new sign right outside of the front door. The sign states the Library hours and Library board information. Regular hours of operation:  M (12-8), T-W (10-6), Th (12-8), Sat. (10-2). The Library board meets in the Reading Room at 6 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.

Gnome and Fairy Door Scavenger Hunt
“Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder.” E.B. White
Can you use your imagination to make-believe that the woodland gnomes and fairies have come inside where it’s cool to avoid the August heat? Many library patrons are enjoying doing the same thing. Patrons are reading books, looking at magazines, doing research, playing board games and working puzzles in the children’s room, as well as attending book clubs. An air-conditioned library is a perfect place for cooling off and escaping with a good book during the heat of summer.  Although no fairies or gnomes have been spotted, there is evidence of tiny doors that have appeared throughout the library. There are scavenger hunt sheets on the table right inside the front door where the coloring sheets are located. There are 10 gnome/fairy doors located in the Library. Use the clues on the sheet and walk quietly (don’t run, precious ones) throughout the Library to see how many you can find. When you locate a door, write the color of the door by that clue. Please don’t disturb the doors because the gnomes and fairies are sleeping during the day while the sun is up. Why not check out a favorite fairy tale to read again?

New Ann Patchett Novel at Library
Author Ann Patchett seems to be everywhere this summer promoting her latest book, “Whistler.”  It is another gem in her list of novels that her fans are praising. It is, of course, available at the Signal Mountain Library, along with all the fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books that she has written; nearly 20 books in all. Ann writes about friendship, connections, family, and everyday moments. She is a storyteller at heart. If you’ve not read a book by Ann Patchett, a good one to start with is her book of essays, located in the non-fiction section. “These Precious Days” was written in 2021. I got my large print edition on a trip to Parnassus, the bookstore she co-owns in Nashville. Well worth the trip, as I knew it was a book to keep, and I’ve picked it up to read for the third time this summer.  “These Precious Days” gives some insight into the writing of her novels. On CSPAN’s “America’s Book Club,” Ann said, “The experience of loving a book is not complete until you have turned around and said to someone, ‘You have got to read this.’”
