Yoga Festival to Benefit Organ Transplant Group

Southern Bend, a new nonprofit organization started by Heather Dendy and Kari Pollard, will kick off the first yoga festival in Chattanooga. Open hearted individuals are invited to join hundreds of their soon to be closest friends in a powerful practice of unity and breath on Saturday, August 27, from noon to 11 p.m. at Coolidge Park.

With the help of SBYF board members, these ladies worked hard and furiously to get Southern Bend Yoga Festival up and running, and have partnered with local retailers, food and beverage vendors, live music, national talent and native artists. Southern Bend is a family-oriented all day festival that will feature slack lining, meditation, paddle boarding, acroyoga, kids yoga and so much more. If tai chi, sunset paddle boarding, or flow classes are not your thing, then pull up a mat and take a savasana (quiet prone pose) instead!

Southern Bend aims to unite the community in joyful celebration. Igniting passions for positive change, mindful living and a belief that great things are possible when people knit together, on and off the mat, is the idea for this event. Perhaps a bend in perspective can accumulate and build into a movement large enough to change the world we live in or change the life of one precious child.

At the festival these gals hope to introduce many of us to yoga who have been curious about it and all it has to offer. The proceeds from the festival will support the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, which is dear to founder Heather’s heart since her son, Benjamin, is on the liver transplant list. To help, donate, or participate will be an acknowledgement of the web of life that connects each single spirit to a great community cause. So “Be the Bend!” Go www.southernbendfestival.com or contact Aloyse Brown at aloyseblair@gmail.com for more information.

PictureSignal Mountain Grammar School in 1926
by Helen Barrett
The Mountain Arts Community Center will celebrate 90 years of community service, with a name change along the way, on Saturday, August 27, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The celebration marks a career as an icon for Signal Mountain, beginning with its opening as Signal Mountain Grammar School for the 1926 school year. During its years from 1926 until 1999 as an active grammar school, generations of students passed through its doors, played on the playground, pulled pigtails, tormented teachers and made memories that lasted for lifetimes.

This building has never been vacant since opening day! Ending life as an active educational facility, it was reborn as the Mountain Arts Community Center, building upon the years of service and giving once again to the community that birthed it.

The celebration involves alumni who will tell stories and remember good times, patrons of the arts programs at the MACC, and mountain residents and their families who will join each other on the grounds. The blacktop will host traditional games like Go Fish, hopscotch, a jump rope competition and a bean bag toss. It wouldn’t be a birthday without a special birthday cake, provided by B’s Sweets’ Brianne Hager. Brianne has taught many cooking classes for eager bakers at the MACC in recent years.

Teachers and students will demonstrate art, music, martial arts, and drama. Folk dancers will dance and artists will demonstrate all sorts of crafts. Forms of drama such as mime, storytelling and puppetry will titillate the interest of observers and participants alike. The strong music program currently offered by the MACC will provide a showcase of talent to enchant the ears of listeners.

Past projects that have a continued life, such as the fairy garden Little Root, will be on display. Of paramount importance is the Signal Mountain Lion’s Club car raffle. The Lions will also cook hot dogs and assist with parking.

This event is sponsored by the MACC Patrons organization, which hosted a potluck dinner on June 3, in preparation for this big event. At the dinner, alumni shared memories and stories of the teachers and the students who passed through the doors, and the importance they played in the lives of families now spread far and wide.

Land for the school was donated by C.E. James. The structure was erected by R.W. Arnold, low-bidder, for the lofty sum of $27,942. The building, now on the historical register, reflects the rich architectural values of the time, and the dedication to the mountain setting both in the placement and the design. The generously-sized, light-filled classrooms provide an ideal setting for the art and music classes which fill the air with enchanting sight and sound. The jewel box of a theatre, which seats 250 on a raked floor, is currently awaiting necessary repairs to restore it to its original beauty. This treasure generally hosts 25 to 30 performances and concerts each year. The unique venue often sells out to eager patrons.

Come visit the old school that has new life again! Find out more on the MACC website.

The Signal Mountain Business Association will kick off fall in grand fashion with its second annual Bluegrass & BBQ fundraising event on Saturday, August 20. This Signal Mountain shindig is hosted by Pruett’s Market and will run from 5-8 p.m.

Live music will accompany a scrumptious buffet of barbecue, sides and beverages provided by Pruett’s. The event will happen rain or shine, with a big tent set up on the grassy area just outside the store to provide cover for the band, buffet and dining area.

“We’ll be prepared to serve folks a delicious meal, regardless of the weather,” said Pruett’s general manager, Justin Davis. “We’re hoping for a beautiful evening, of course, in which case the tent can provide some shade from the early evening sun.”
This year, the MBA has invited local merchants to set up booths, as well, with over a dozen already expected to attend.

“Last year’s Bluegrass & BBQ family event was our first, and we had a really great turnout,” says MBA President Patrick Holland. “We wanted to expand things this year to include local merchants as a way to expose some of our hidden treasures in the business community to our residents. CostumeVille, for example, is a terrific online business located in Ashley Plaza, and they will be offering face-painting during the festivities.”

Advanced tickets for the event will save hungry diners some money and are available now at Pruett’s, First Tennessee Bank of Signal Mountain, Olive Bean Café and Mountain Top Toys. An adult plate is $10 in advance ($15 at the door), and kids 12-and-under can eat for $6. A bottomless beer cup will also be available for sale at the event, with multiple beer brands on hand.

Proceeds will help support our business community, and offset costs for a local business directory for both residents and visitors to Signal Mountain. More details about the event and the MBA organization can be found at signalmba.com.

Guild Seeks Your Help to Update Phone Book

Picture
The Signal Mountain Community Guild is in the process of compiling the 2016-2018 Signal Mountain Phone Directory, which includes residents of the 37377 zip code.

Every two years, the Guild publishes and sells the Phone Directory as its primary fundraiser. While the Guild obtains a listing of phone numbers from AT&T (which should include Comcast and EPB numbers), the Guild relies on residents to self-report mobile numbers and recent changes that the listing may not include.

Please note that even if you were listed in the old directory, each year the listing from AT&T is different and you must still contact the Guild to ensure placement, especially for mobile numbers. The proceeds from sales and advertising allow the Community Guild to contribute funds to many local organizations, as well as provide two college scholarships each year. The new directory will be for sale from late 2016 until 2018.

If you would like to add or change your phone number or address, or if you would like to advertise, please fill out the entry form on the Community Guild's new website. (Note: There is an old website still in existence that the Guild no longer has access to. Please make sure to visit the correct site.)
