4/25/2018

PictureThe blacksmith shop at McCoy Farm & Gardens has been rebuilt.
The old blacksmith shop at the McCoy Farm & Gardens has been rebuilt on the original site by the Signal Mountain Lions Club. The original chimney and forge were saved and are operational. In addition, some of the original siding was salvaged and used on the interior of the shop. A few tools from the original shop were saved and McCoy has received some donations of tools and equipment, including anvil, vise and an old manual drill press.

McCoy Farm volunteers would like to to have more old tools from the early 1900s that would typically be found in a farm/blacksmith shop. These tools will be prominently displayed in the shop.

If you have tools that you would like to donate to McCoy Farm & Gardens, please contact Paul Jenson at (423) 886-2889 or email him at jensbrow@epbfi.com.

Lone Oak VFD Providing Smoke Alarm Installations

1/23/2018

The State Fire Marshal’s Office recently presented the Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Department with a supply of 10-year battery smoke alarms to be installed in homes within the community that are at high risk of fire. This statewide distribution of smoke alarms launched in November of 2012 and is part of the State Fire Marshal’s effort to both educate and equip Tennesseans to incorporate fire safety into their daily lives.

“We want residents to make sure they have functional smoke alarms in their homes, as well as a rehearsed fire-escape plan. These are tools proven to save lives – because even one fire death is one too many,” says State Fire Marshal Julie Mix McPeak.

The alarms are free, but must be installed by the fire department or a partnering organization that has been trained by the fire department. Because supplies are limited, the fire department may need to give first preference to those who are not able to otherwise afford smoke alarms.

“We are excited to be able to partner with the State Fire Marshal’s Office in providing these smoke alarms for families in our community,” said Chief Dana Clift of the Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Department. “Fire can spread through a home in a matter of minutes, and smoke alarms can give residents the warning needed to get out safely.”

To request an installation, email loneoakvfd810@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/LOVFD. Include your name, address, email and phone number. A fire department representative will then contact you to schedule a time for the installation.

In addition to having working smoke alarms, follow these other important tips to make sure your home is fire-safe:
  • Always stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food.
  • Check to see that matches and lighters are kept up high in a cabinet with a childproof lock.
  • Develop a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room, as well as an outside meeting place. Share and practice the plan with every member of the household.
  • Keep portable space heaters and candles three feet away from anything that can burn, including people, furniture, and pets.
  • Always turn off portable space heaters when you leave the room or go to bed.
  • Have the chimney cleaned and checked regularly.
  • Do not smoke in bed.
  • Make sure that all matches and ashes are cool before being thrown away.
  • Make sure that extension cords are in good condition and are used to power small items only – never major appliances.

For more information on fire safety, visit the State Fire Marshal’s Office “Get Alarmed Program” website at www.tn.gov/commerce/article/fire-get-alarmed.

PictureMrs. Laura Lusk’s fourth grade class at Bachman Elementary in 1957-58. Bachman is hosting an alumni event for all past students and staff on November 4 from 4-7 p.m. Do you recognize anyone?
The Bachman Community Center will host a reunion open house on Saturday, November 4, from 4-7 p.m. for alumni and staff of Bachman Elementary. Anyone who attended or worked at Bachman is invited to drop by and enjoy refreshments, see the building and examine archival material. Bachman staff would love help identifying folks in pictures and encourage people to bring their own photos to share.

In addition, the Rev. James Douthat will be telling stories and answering questions. There will be drawings every half hour for door prizes from Signal Mountain businesses, and folks will have the opportunity to learn about how our building serves our community today.

Rather than a chili cook-off this year, Bachman is partnering with the Bread Basket to sponsor a chili sale. The order deadline is soon, November 6! Place your order in person at BCC at 2815 Anderson Pike, online at bachmancc.org or by phone at (423) 886-4842.

Each order costs $25, serves four people and includes a half-gallon of ready-to-heat chili and a large loaf of famous sourdough bread from the Bread Basket. How’s that for an easy dinner or fabulous football food? You can pick up orders at the drive-thru at Bachman on Saturday, November 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

PictureWalden's Ridge Guild will be celebrating fall at its upcoming meetings.
Over 60 years ago, a group of friends on Signal Mountain got together to discuss developing a playground and a day camp for children in the neighborhood. That gathering turned into the Walden’s Ridge Guild, a charitable and service organization that has been benefiting the community ever since. There are several interesting meetings planned for the fall.

WRG will meet on Thursday, October 19, at 10 a.m. at "Glen Mary," 3509 East Brow Rd., the traditional Oehmig family summer home. Mary Catherine O'Kelley is hostess with Susan Jensen as co-hostess. Two professional interior designers will present a program entitled "New and Fresh Ideas for your Home."

Closer to Thanksgiving, on Thursday, November 16, at 10 a.m., the guild will meet at the home of Guild President Jeanie Siegel, 2709 East Brow Rd., with Karen Stone as co-hostess. Karen Elliott will speak about her experiences filming "Southern Accents," a show produced by WTC. Mrs. Elliot is well known for introducing viewrs to the culture, beauty and history that make the South unique.

The next meeting, on Thursday, December 21, will be at the home of Marie Morrison, 114 Sylvan Dr., with Carolyn Nardo as co-hostess. The luncheon meeting begins at 11 a.m. and anyone interested in joining the Guild is especially invited to come and visit. Members are reminded to bring a luncheon dish to share.

The Walden’s Ridge Guild promotes the welfare of the community. Meetings are open, and all residents of the mountain are welcome. For more information, contact Membership Chair Karen Stone (423) 886-4568 or President Jeanie Siegel 443-5841.

Historian Jim Ogden to Speak at McCoy Benefit

9/26/2017

PictureJim Ogden will speak about the Civil War on Signal Mountain at McCoy Farm & Gardens' Wine and Cheese event on October 6.
by Carol Lannon
Mountain residents have a unique opportunity to hear a bona fide expert on the Civil War speak at an event Friday, October 6, right here on Walden’s Ridge at McCoy Farm & Gardens.

Jim Ogden is the well-known historian of the Chickamauga Battlefield National Military Park, one of the four original National Military Parks created by Congress in the 1890s. In 1988, Chickamauga created an official historian position and Jim became the first and only one the park has ever had! He’s known to have “encyclopedic” knowledge of the Civil War, particularly about the battles in our area. He has also created six video presentations on related subjects for the C-SPAN video library. His topic will be "The Civil War on Walden’s Ridge."

Jim’s desire to be a ranger and his passion for his subject began in childhood and never wavered. In college he had to insist on the course of study he wanted to pursue – the Civil War and only the Civil War – and he persevered to complete his degree, creating his own curriculum and internship at Harper’s Ferry. In order to work at Chickamauga initially, he took law enforcement courses because that’s what the park wanted, and while patrolling, he enhanced his knowledge. Work in other parks followed, but Jim was finally given permanent assignment where he wanted to be: Chickamauga.

When our grandson visited from California, we took him to the battlefield at Chickamauga. He was captivated, especially by the guns and cannon, and by Jim’s enthusiasm. Jim answered every question, enthralling us with his depth of knowledge.

The event, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., will benefit the restoration and maintenance of McCoy Farm & Gardens. There will be delectable refreshments, and casual attire and comfortable walking shoes are suggested. The Blacksmith Shop will be open, along with the beauteous new Carriage House restrooms.

Enter the grounds from 1715 Anderson Pike or 1604 Taft Hwy. Park in the gravel lot off Taft or behind the Carriage House. The suggested tax-deductible donation is $30. Please RSVP by October 3 to Genie Robins at (423) 866-4060 or browbeanie@comcast.net.

Jim says that he tries to present information interestingly enough so that people will want to learn more on their own. He aims "to fascinate them with a story," and he doesn’t disappoint. Come and be fascinated.
