SM Library Kicks Off Summer Fun for Kids
The Signal Mountain Library is excited to announce the schedule for this year’s Summer Enrichment Series for children of all ages. Every event is free of charge and open to all. No sign-up or memberships are necessary. Just show up and enjoy!
All events take place on a Tuesday and start at 11 a.m. The three concluding programs will occur in July. Also, on Thursday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m., local author Jeff Barry will visit us for a reading and book signing to promote his new novel, “Go to Hell Ole Miss,” a mystery set in the hill country of Mississippi. Copies of the book will be available for sale. As always, we host three different book clubs: Rogue Reading Club (Thursday, June 6, 2 p.m.), which chooses a topic rather than a specific book; Library Book Club (Thursday, June 20, 2 p.m.); and Classics Book Club (Tuesday, June 18, 6:30 p.m.). For current reading selections or any other questions, please call (423) 886-7323. by John Atkinson |

School News & Information
Signal Mountain was founded 100 years ago, and the town is ready for its festive Centennial Anniversary! Now is a great time to reflect on what our beloved town was like in 1919.
What was it like living in coal mining communities on Signal Mountain? There was no running water or electricity in the mining communities, even by the 1920s. Primary schools, located near the mines, provided only basic education for the very youngest children. Far too soon, the young boys went to work in the mines along with their fathers, uncles and brothers. By the age of 40 or 50, most men had developed black lung disease and were too sick to continue working.
