Tuna, Texas, may be the third smallest town in the state, but it boasts many great characters. This month these characters will be brought to hilarious life in the Signal Mountain Playhouse’s production of “Greater Tuna,” a very popular comedy. Written by Joe Sears, Jaston Williams and Joe Howard, “Greater Tuna” at one time was the most performed show in the country. It was actually performed at the White House for former President George Bush and Barbara, who both loved it.
One of the most remarkable aspects of “Greater Tuna” is that two actors each play 10 parts, ranging from both ends of the quirky small town spectrum. Everybody is there – the puritanical and righteous citizen, the town drunk, the used gun saleslady, the perpetually losing political candidate, the reform school alum, the ramped up high school football coach and more.
Running February 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25, the show will be directed by Michelle Ford, a veteran of 20 years in the entertainment business who has an impressive resume that includes directing and acting in live theater, film, TV and radio. This is Michelle’s debut in the director’s chair for the Playhouse, and the group welcomes her heartily.
Both of the actors are highly polished from many theatrical ventures over the years. The Playhouse board is thrilled that Dennis Parker and Mark Oglesby will enliven the wonderful characters in this comedy/satire of small town life. These two will be fabulous.
In addition, Michelle Ford has organized quite a treat for theater-goers: live music played by some marvelous talent before curtain at 8 p.m.
On Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 18, Jeff and Marcy Paulson will entertain; on Saturday, February 11, it will be Paul Hendricks and his group; on Friday, February 17, it will be Spatial Effects with Tom Brown; on Friday, February 24, Sharon Dunn and her group will entertain. The musician for closing night is TBA.
Tickets to “Greater Tuna” cost $15 each and are sold in advance at the MACC, 809 Kentucky Ave., or at the door. The ticket price includes dessert and coffee served prior to the show, beginning at 6:45 pm. Curtain is at 8 p.m. The location is The Crest Center at Signal Crest United Methodist Church at 1005 Ridgeway Ave. The Crest Center is located in the rear of the church complex and can be reached by parking in the lot that, facing the church, is on the right. There is a sign on the fence that will direct you to The Crest Center, which will be directly ahead through the glass doors.
